About This Place
Vahanavank is a medieval monastery near Kapan, at the foot of Mount Tigranasar in the Voghji River landscape. Founded in the early tenth century, the complex includes the Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator with its adjoining entrance hall and a separate Church of St. Astvatsatsin. Restoration has helped preserve substantial parts of this historic ensemble.
A family visit can focus on comparing the churches and noticing how their stone forms sit within the mountain surroundings. Choose comfortable walking shoes and supervise children around the historic masonry. Keep the visit centred on the monastery grounds unless a separate walking route has been checked.
This is a religious heritage site. Respect worshippers and on-site guidance. Outdoor grounds and indoor spaces may have different access arrangements.
