About This Place
Vorotnavank occupies a ridge above the Vorotan Gorge between Vaghatin and Vorotan villages, near Sisian. Its medieval ensemble brings together churches and monastic buildings around a courtyard, with much of the construction using local basalt. The monastery also has a place in Armenia’s history of learning and manuscript production.
Families can look for the different building forms and imagine how a working monastery once combined worship, study and everyday tasks. The ridge setting makes the landscape an important part of the visit. Wear comfortable shoes, keep children close near changes of level and remain well back from the gorge edge.
This is a religious heritage site. Respect worshippers and on-site guidance. Outdoor grounds and indoor spaces may have different access arrangements.
