About This Place
Hovhannavank stands in Ohanavan village above the Kasakh River Gorge. The monastery’s principal medieval church, dedicated to St. Karapet, was built between 1216 and 1221. Its umbrella-shaped dome, surrounding historic walls and carved inscriptions give families several details to discover before turning to the landscape beyond the buildings.
Children can compare the dome with the shapes of other Armenian churches and look for lettering cut into the stone. Keep them close near the gorge edge. Hovhannavank can be paired with nearby Saghmosavank, while the walking trail between the two should be treated as a separately planned outing.
This is a religious heritage site. Respect worshippers and on-site guidance. Outdoor grounds and indoor spaces may have different access arrangements.
