Khor Virap Monastery

Churches and Monasteries Lusarat

A historic pilgrimage monastery near Lusarat, with Mount Ararat views and the story of Gregory the Illuminator.

About This Place

Khor Virap is a walled monastery near Lusarat in the Ararat Valley, known for views towards Mount Ararat when the weather is clear. Its religious significance is closely tied to the story of Gregory the Illuminator, who, according to church tradition, was imprisoned here before Armenia’s adoption of Christianity. The present complex includes a seventeenth-century main church and an underground pit.

Families can explore the courtyard and church while introducing the story in a way suited to their children’s ages. The descent into the deep pit is optional and calls for particular care; visitors uncomfortable with enclosed underground spaces can stay above ground and enjoy the monastery setting.

This is a religious heritage site. Respect worshippers and on-site guidance. Outdoor grounds and indoor spaces may have different access arrangements.
