About This Place
Marmashen Monastery stands on a plateau overlooking the Akhuryan River in Shirak. Its churches reflect architectural traditions associated with medieval Ani, with decorative arches, carved window surrounds and distinctive dome roofs. The surviving buildings and nearby ruins reveal a complex that once played an important role in the region’s cultural life.
Children can compare the repeated arches and spot differences between the church shapes. Take time to enjoy the river setting, while keeping younger visitors away from the water and edges. View the ruins from stable ground and avoid climbing on historic masonry.
This is a religious heritage site. Respect worshippers and on-site guidance. Outdoor grounds and indoor spaces may have different access arrangements.
